Well…it was a mixed bag at The Forbes Hotel for the finals. I’ve never competed as a Singer/Guitarist against people performing with backing tracks so it was an interesting mix. Some of it worked, some of it I wished I had my super powered magic remote so I could fast forward.
Competitions that are by vote or how many people you can pull in are great because they really test your ability to detach from outcome. It could be the best performance of your life, or the worst. Whether you have the crowd made of 90% or 10% of your friends you still have to give it the same level of performance charm knowing that it all comes down to popular vote one way or the other. Certainly when the result is out of your hands you get to just have fun with it and give it all on stage.
1st & 2nd place were well deserved and I was very pleasantly surprised to have made it in 3rd place given I hadn’t really bought in a crowd. I had fun and…I HAD A FULL ON HECKLER that kept yelling out “NEXT!”. I believe his name rhymed with Rick? Stick? Trick? Oh yeah, that’s right…. it was Dick.
In all seriousness though, good experience to deal with whilst on stage. Dick apologised afterwards and saying that he did that because I was better than his friend and he wanted his friend to win cos he had never won anything in his life, blah blah blah (insert polite listening face here)…..I think he just needs to have more faith in his friend. And perhaps not spit on people when he talks to them. K?
Setlist & Star Rating out of 5 (with 5 being awesome):
1. No Diggity **** 2. Forget You ** 3. Lonely Boy *****
Life as a full-time Muso….never boring.
Huge thanks to:
1.Tori, Karen, Wayne & Friends for showing their support
2. Pie Face on Clarence St for being open till 3am. The perils of being too nervous to eat before you go onstage means you are STARVING when you leave.
On a very funny side note……….Some of my friends who came along to support me got great stage side seats and waited patiently for the comp to begin. Such a shame that they actually unwittingly crashed some strangers 30th birthday on the 3rd floor whilst I was performing on the 2nd floor. We bumped into each other on the stairs about 20 minutes after I got off stage. 😀
